The day that was β€¦.

Tuesday 17th February 2021 at Permata Sentul saw 20 JAWS Sharks forming 10 x (2-man Scramble Teams) escape the stormy weather of Jakarta for the calm and soothing hilly terrain of the little mountain course gem that is Permata Sentul (PSP).

With many a golfer finding this quirky little course a headache when playing alone, the JAWS admin agreed on PSP as the perfect layout for the first special event of the 2021 JAWS calendar: a 2 man scramble.

The 10 teams were to enjoy a unusually quiet PSP course in prime condition and its signture zippy greens living up to their reputation despite the recent wet weather, which has transformed several of Jakarta’s, Tangerang and Bogor Golf courses into swamplands.

Hats off to the PSP Golf Maintenance team for keeping and maintaining the course in very playable conditions regardless of all the recent rain. With 10 teams sporting varying team handicaps from 1 the lowest to 10 the highest, it would take a very, very wise man to predict the eventual money winners.

With the game of Golf often regarded as purely an individual sport, the 2-man scramble format allows golfers to enjoy the game with a different mindset incorporating teamwork, strategy and communication, as the team players plot their ways around 18 holes for the lowest amount of strokes .

WIth the 4 eventual money winners featuring the two highest handicaps and two of the lowest in the field, what can we learn from the days play? 2 is better then 1? Don’t underestiamte the power of teamwork? Or some clearly enjoy team golf more, it is more fun afterall!

It was great to see the enthusiasm towards the format of the special event and several agreed they enjoyed playing this tough course PSP as a team rather then alone, with the course being notoriously tight and challenging off the tee, the winning strategy was to keep 1 ball safely in play, allowing playing partners to be looser and more aggressive off the tee gaining more distance and resulting in shorter clubs into the greens and numerous opportunities during the round for birdies.

Well played to the winning teams on the day, and the final results were very competitive with only 5 strokes seperating the top 9 teams on the day. It is becoming quite clear who the specialist (2-man scramble) players are – Jim Korbalis one of them with one 1st place and one tied -1st place finish in two starts he may expect a few prior phone calls weeks before the next two-man scramble or perhaps  more thorough handicap surveillence leading up towards the event from his fellow JAWS admins.

A big thank you to our generous main sponsor for the day: San Miguel who supplied a large cooler of chilled Beers, which went down very well with the members post game.

With the usual supsects staying out well into the afternoon at PSP’s open air club house dining area overlooking the 8th green , reminiscing about the days play and enjoying one anothers company.

Congratulations to the Winning Teams:

Not only must we uphold our reputation as a society at golf courses, don’t forget to value your own reputation as a golfer on and off the golf course.

For more details on JAWS GOLF ETIQUETTES please click the link and here below we start a new exercise of RULES CORNER BY JENS ROESTEL , AS SOME OF YOU MAY KNOW JENS IS A QUALIFIED R&A FIRST GRADE UMPIRE , So the idea here is to help as all learn , understand and follow the rules of the game better

RULES CORNER

A player put his ball onto the tee and starts his preparation for the stroke. The player touches the ball and it drops down from the tee.

Is it a penalty, when the player put the ball back onto the tee or is it possible to put the ball back onto the tee, because the ball was not in play at that moment?

Answer: Does a ball, which is not in play from the tee or it is touched during stroke preparation, drop from the tee, it can be placed back without penalty.

The ball is in play, after the first stroke is done. (For this the ball does not need to be touched. Once a player intents to hit a ball with a stroke the ball is in play)

The Ball of a player is on the green. The player puts and hits the foot of a caddie of another player, which walks onto the putting line, because the caddie was not concentrated.

Which ruling applies?

  1. The ball has to be played where it got to a rest, no penalty applied.
  2. The put has to be replayed from the original putting position. No penalty applied.
  3. A ball in motion was deflected and the player, who’s caddie was responsible gets 2 strokes penalty

Answer: b) is correct

A ball, which is moving and was played at the green and it is deflected by something, what is not belonging to the game … the stroke is void and has to be replayed from the original position. The caddie does not belong to the game.
