the day that was: Imperial on 30 April

“Golf has probably kept more people sane than psychiatrists have.”

— Harvey Penick

14 JAWS Shark headed West to Karawaci and Desmond Muirhead’s challenging and quirky Imperial Golf Club, complete with all its Lakes, undulating fairway’s, large expanses of white sand bunker’s, the resident flock of geese which patrol the 18th Fairway and it’s large and airy clubhouse overlooking the 18th Hole  favoured by the sunset crowd for cold drinks and hearty food, the prefect way to welcome in the weekend.

4 vouchers given for landing in circle on hole 4. Well done !

Chris, James and Aryan played in the same flight, teeing off on hole 10. All three players made good drives on the first hole but only James managed to make the green with his second shot. Chris then started badly with a treble and a double par but then birdied hole 14. His game could be described as a ‘Yoyo’ round, up and down , making some good pars but then making too many doubles and some trebles mostly due to finding the water on many occasions. James was also having an inconsistent round. His unusual short swing was very effective and he was driving the ball long and he struck his irons well but made too many doubles and trebles today despite making some very good pars. Meanwhile young Aryan showed that although he is still learning the game, he has the potential to get better as he showed on holes 7 and 8 where he made two pars. However, the rest of the game was often spent on the adjacent fairways as most of his drives went right, And he then struggled to recover. With good conditions, perfect weather, the threesomes still managed to have some fun despite some inconsistent golf.

The first group off of the 10th tee was Jude, Emil, Marvin and Jim. What a day, fabulous weather, great golfing outing. Jude started us off, he was a little wild out of  the tee box, but was well in control of his game. He would score a 51 gross on the front 9 and Jim struggled a little on his putting on the front 9 and score a 49, Emil would play a nice front 9 scoring a 43 and Marvin who was the longest player out of the tee box would score a 42.  But all 4 players came alive on the back 9. Jude scored a 44 with a total of 4 pars and 8 bogeys for a gross 95 and a net of 77, not too bad. Then Jim scored a 43 on the back with a total of 4 pars and 11 bogeys for a gross 92 and a net of 72 to take 3rd place. Marvin would also score a 43 on the back 9 scoring a gross 85 and a net of 73 to finish 4th overall best net.  Wait a minute here comes Emiliano with a 42 on the back 9. He would finish with a gross 85 and a net of 70 to finish in 1st place for best net. A great day was had by all and some solid golf played by all flight members.

The foursome of Willie N, Gaurav, Bhram and Fernando teed off happily from hole 10. Bhram quickly distinguished himself by booming long drives that even Gaurav could not match. We quickly found out that Bhram’s weakness was his 2nd shot. That was well compensated with good chipping and putting. He ended up with a decent but not great round. Willie played very well with an all-rounded game, he had a few troubles in bunkers because he always found the one and only footstep left by preceding golfers. A Good combination of driving, chipping and putting for a good round. Who else can slice 3 balls on the water on hole 9 par 5 ? Fernando clearly  had a round from hell. Every bounce on the fairways was a bad bounce. Every green was misread. Every club decision was wrong … 9 penalty strokes and 37 putts later he came home with 97. On the contrary: Gaurav was the rock of Gibraltar, steady in all aspects of his game:  Great putting, great recoveries, great drives. A surprising bounce into the water on the last hole robbed him of a gross 79 but he still finished 2nd overall with a net 71. Well played Sir !
