JAWS VS THE DOGS
THE FINS AND FANGS CUP
Saturday 5th September, 2020.
Marks the date of the inaugural Fins & Fangs Cup between one of Jakarta’s oldest and well established Golf Societies: The DOGS (Djakarta Old Golf Society) and Jakarta’s most recently formed Golf society: JAWS (Jakarta, Albatross, Weekday Society).
The DOGS kindly accepted the proposal to duel in the good spirit of Golf and camaraderie for golfing bragging rights amongst the Jakarta Golf community.

The format of play was Fourball Better Ball, Nett based match play with 12 teams of 2 vs 2, so 24 players per team and the day saw a wide range of golfers with varying skill levels, teaming up among their golfing teammates, in the most exciting and purest form of golfing competition: ‘Matchplay’.

The DOGS fielded a team of players ranging from handicap 3 – 30 and JAWS fielded a team of players with handicaps from 4 – 28, and it was up to the prudent and shrewd decision making of each Captains Douglas McQuarter(DOGS) and Tarlok Singh (JAWS) to select their most competitive 2 ball combinations to fly the flag of their representing Golf Societies.

The venue was Permata Sentul, the canny Thomson and Wolveridge Golfing layout known for its quirky playing conditions, highlighted by very small and slippery greens, narrow fairways and dramatically undulating fairways, the base for the current 6 week DOGS golfing eclectic event with the Fins and Fangs matchplay falling on Week 3 of their Week 6 cycle.

The DOGS committee kindly allowed JAWS players to not only play their match-play games but also register and compete in the regular DOGS fun format of play with prizes like Longest Drive, Nearest to the Pin, Drive and Pitch etc…

With a few JAWS players plundering the DOGs treasury like Vice-Captain Simon Reynolds who took home the Drive and Chip award on the Par 4, Hole 4 sticking his second shot from the fairway from 110m to 8 feet with a pitching wedge.

It was clear from the start both Golfing Societies were up for reveling in the challenge to take on this tricky mountain course layout and the match tee’d off under very hot and humid conditions just after noon.

After the turn the clouds overhead threatened with an inevitable afternoon rainfall, and with most teams having played out between 12-14 holes, play was suspended as players took shelter out on course.

Adding to the intrigue and excitement of the golfing on course, after about a 30 minute break, and relative relief from rain, thunder and lightning play resumed under atmospheric and misty afternoon fog, following the heavy rain.

In the end, as the rain returned and with the light fading quickly, and with several teams yet to finish 18 holes, the Captains agreed to compromise for the sake of a deciding on the day result, the ongoing games yet to be concluded with holes remaining, were to be decided and concluded based on the final score at the end of play, albeit with holes remaining.

In conclusion it was JAWS who were crowned as champions by a slim margin of 1 match, with 5 wins, 4 losses and 3 draws of the inaugural Fins and Fangs Cups 2020 Inter-society match play, a glowing tribute to both teams fighting spirit and the well balanced team selection and player combinations by both teams captains and committee members in the run up to the event.

As a bonus, two things happened , JAWS and DOGS celebrated the birthday of JAWS cofounder and admin Chris and (over 8 million IDR) good money was raised for The DOS chosen charity: Yayasan HOGS thanks to the generous on the day support from both societies, and a great day out of golf combining good competitive golf, in warm spirits, played on a great course whilst supporting a charity doing great things helping Indonesian kids suffering from Cleft lip and palate disabilities. With the confidence that money raised will be helping to provide major facial reconstructive surgery for these kids in major need of life-changing support.
We also would like to take this opportunity to thank Dougy , John and Sarah, the committee at DOGS and all the DOGS players for the warm hospitality shown to JAWS , we hope to reciprocate the same in time to come.
