the day that was 8th September, 2020

With a covering of cloud and a cool breeze the 7 golfers were treated to perfect conditions on a course that was in good condition.

The trio of Chris, Akmal and Diana started on hole 10 with all three golfers getting a bogey on the first hole.

Diana hit long drives all day and had some great approach shots. She looked sure to be in contention but then hit a triple and  then the bunkers which cost her. She is sure to push the leaders in future.

Akmal played well on the front nine  with a Gross 45 and some very good pars. He started badly on the back nine but then finished well to shoot a 75 Net.

Chris was hitting the ball well all day and was close to several birdies but just missed his putts. He played one above his handicap and another consistent round of golf.

First flight off 1 at Modern were: Tarlok, Rensu, Aleksi and Simon. A big welcome to JAWS for first time player Rendra Sugiono a.k.a Rensu, who is a golfer by day and Indonesia TV Football Broadcaster/Presenter on Indonesian, European, and Champions League Football Games, thanks for the tips for the upcoming re-start of the Shopee Liga 1 Domestic Football League.

Tarlok tee’d off with a spring in his step having captained the JAWS MATCHPLAY TEAM to victory over the DOGS at PSP over the weekend.

Armed with a shiny pink ball, Tarlok’s game appeared to be in a hangover as the final pink ball on hole 18 was not the same one that was used on Hole 1, such is golf everyone is excused when having an off day. He will no doubt come back strong in time for his matchplay on Friday.

Rensu, a great addition to JAWS, always vocal and with experience in football commentary has great potential as a Golf broadcaster, and kept the flight in good spirits. When there was ever any danger of the mood getting too serious jokes lightened the air, like when:

When Aleksi the ‘Flying Finn’ was lining up a slippery downhill 10ft birdie putt on the Par 3, 11th Hole, Rensu reminded him that his name in Javanese would be ‘Alex-Ono’ surprisingly the putt was missed shaving the left-side. Rensu hit 2-3 amazing 3 woods from the fairway on Par 5’s long and straight 230m, clearly his favourite club, not the easiest shot to pull off in golf so keep it up Rensu.

Some short putts were missed and some chips around the green lacked conviction, which would otherwise, would have found him easily in the money on his first loop with JAWS

Aleksi finished off as BEST NETT II, with a Nett 74, and was solid all day, his new found ability to hit a solid 3 wood off the tee, now means more fairways are found and on most par 4’s he is hitting for the green from the short grass. The temptation to hit Driver every hole is still there, but a couple of well struck 230+ 3 woods down the fairway has proved that sometimes the Driver is best kept in the bag, and shows you don’t need to hit driver all the time to score well. Keep the ball in play: fairways and greens, sir!

Simon returning to the fairways of Peter Thomson’s Modern Golf and Country Club after a 3 month hiatus, hit his Driver and 3 Wood very solid allday, and combined it with well struck-irons from the tee box and fairway’s. Despite having 8 putts for birdie unfortunately none dropped with a few shaving the hole. A 75 nett and 1 shot off the winning circle was down to clumsy chipping and pitching from around the greens. Better chipping would have saved 5-6 strokes, and a gentle reminder to himself that Golf is best played when you love your Driver, Wedge and your Putter.

Congratulations to the winners

In first place was Chris, Net 73. Second place was Aleksi, Net 74.
