In general, JAWS members like to think of themselves as land-sharks. That was difficult for the 26 Sharks playing Friday afternoon as it became tough to differentiate Sentul Highlands Golf Club from the Java Sea.

The seven flights teed off just after noon and by the fourth hole serious downpours began making some of the greens look like fishing ponds. By the turn, heavy rain rendered the course unplayable and Sharks gathered undercover bonding on coffee, beers, cigars and old golf tales.

Time and torrential downpours threatened an early end to the day. However, after about 40 minutes it let up just enough to give it a go and the Sharks resumed the hunt. The weather held up and all flights managed to finished just as the sun dropped below the horizon. Sloppy conditions were challenging but the greens dried up nicely and net scores were still within the 68 to 86 range. A big thanks to everyone who make it out and weathered the conditions.

Teeing off First Flight on Hole#11 were: Simon McMenemy, Simon Reynolds, Abdul and Veronica. Simon Mc’s heritage was clear from the first strike as he blasted a 17 -degree hybrid 230m off the first tee box. Playing the Sentul Highlands layout for the first time, his raw power got him into trouble numerous times running out fairway’s on numerous occasions. Simon’s Mc power and potential was highlighted by his play on Hole #2, after taking a 30 mins break from the mid round rain after a hot cup of coffee, he blasted his driver 310m off the tee on the downhill 400m par 4, leaving just a flick with a 54-degree wedge for the easiest 2 putt par of the day. Simon R’s round was like the weather…. hot and cold.

The round got off to a flyer, and after striking a solid 50-degree from the fairway on hole #13 (the 3rd hole of the day) to 6 ft and an easy birdie. As the clouds became darker and the rain approached the hot streak was cooled down by the afternoon rain. The rain interval and hot coffee work wonders as a 25 ft birdie putt was drained on the 1st hole of the 2nd nine, and some solid late afternoon play was rewarded with a best nett 3 finish and some pocket money. Abdul, was also a Sentul Highlands virgin. Despite a few big numbers, he thoroughly enjoyed his day out after recently recovering from a slipped disc.

Patience and perseverance was rewarded and the back nine was a vast improvement from the opening nine. Drives were coming off the sweet spot and well struck irons were flying off the middle of the face, offered plenty of reward. It should have Abdul looking forward to his next round of golf. Veronica’s game was clearly enjoyable with an ever present smile on her face along with her singing down the fairways. Her laid-back charm can offer a lot of tense and stressed out golfer’s some perspective, and a gentle reminder that although it’s important to play well it’s also equally important to have fun. Thank you for the reminder Veronica!

After John, Alexi and KK all going to warm-up at the range prior to tee off, John was off in solid form shooting a string of pars, and a birdie interrupted by a double par here and there. Geoff opened his round with a solid 9 on the first hole. KK was struggling with his drives and that was affecting his game.

Geoff was slowly chipping away at reducing his score as he got into pars as we reached the half way point. As the heavens opened, they played the 9th hole in the rain and headed for a break with everyone else, and were the first out on the back 9 without Geoff who discontinued his round due to the interlude.

The break really helped KK who came back with renewed form but hampered John, and so they swapped forms. KK shot a strong of pars and a birdie, where John was struggling. Alexi was his usual self, minus the alcohol. He produced some great drives and long shots, but as always ,was aiming to drive the ball further than one usually goes on holiday. His frequent ranting and shouting was broken by John’s chirpy signing that didn’t help Alexi at all. Closing scores of 89, 91, 99 for Alexi, KK, John respectively was a fair effort given the rains and challenge posed of the course.

For Randy, Ihwan and Harry it was a mixed day. Aside from a birdie on the 18th hole, Harry wasn’t finding his game and called it a day when the big rains hit. Randy also struggled on the first nine and didn’t find any reprieve on the back after conditions worsened. Ihwan, on the other hand, was the star of the day. With only one triple on the back nine, he found six pars, a birdie and the number 1 spot on the JAWS Leaderboard.

Ola, Laurie, Marvin and Chris all found the conditions a bit challenging. Ola stayed within range on the front nine but the rains clearly iced him as the first two holes on the back took him out of contention. Laurie found a similar profile with pars and bogies on the front keeping him in the hunt and the back completely falling apart. Marvin stayed relatively consistent and hit five pars but not his normal game. Similar to KK, Chris found a bit of mojo after the rains but too many doubles and an ugly double par kept him out of contention.

Divya, Gaurav, Tarlok and Willie started at 12 noon from Hole 12, it was a Par 3.

The Greens were reasonably fast and for a while the rain tried to play spoil sport but in the end we managed to complete our round of 18 holes just at the brink of sunset.

The highlights of the day were the Divya Ahuja jumbo drives along with Tarlok Singh’s excellent chips on to the green to save Pars.

Both, Gaurav and Willie had an off day with the clubs but in the end at JAWS the company is what matters.

Like the rest, Albert, Imran and Punjung found conditions challenging. Welcome Punjung to his first JAWS round. He found some pars and plenty of bogies and all are looking forward to seeing more of what he’s got.

Albert couldn’t find his swing on the front and struggled through just about all of it but sucked down a coffee on the turn, waited out the rain, and hit par on his 10th hole.

Will, Pras, Iris and Steven all found it…wet.

As always, Pras found his share of pars, especially on the Par 3s but also found a few triples and an ugly double par on the last hole.

Iris moved on and let the crazy people play in the rain which is probably good for those in the winner’s circle.

Welcome Steven! He picked a tough course with ugly conditions to begin his life as a Shark. Next round will be even better.
A big thanks to Mba Sarlis and the Sentul Highlands Team for making it a great, albeit wet, day.
