JAWS at Modern Golf & Country Club

Friday 3rd December 2021

There are two things you can do with your head down: Play golf and pray.

4 flights and 13 Sharks were present at Modern GCC for the weekly Friday noo hit, with our decision to play West Jakarta courses paying off with players enjoying hot and warm conditions with no sign of the recent afternoon rains. With a walking rate of 350,000 for 18 Holes and an affordable golf and cart rate, Modern has become a favourite place for some midweek exercise with the golf course always in great condition.

1st flight off Hole #1 was Jim, Karan and Jude. 1st of the group was Jim. He really didn’t do much more than play the game. Not making very many shots to remember.  He finished over his HDCP but we know he will bounce back sooner or later. Second off was Jude, shooting a 45 on the front. He  clearly needed a few holes to warm up…. as on the back nine he was making great contact with the ball and scored an impressive 39. He finished with 8 pars and a gross 84 and a net 70 to win 3rd place for low net. Last in the group was one of the newer players. A young man by the name of Karan aka: ‘KK’, who is a high hitting long ball player. Like most of the hard hitters in this game he can be a little wild at times. When he gets a little more control he will be one of the players leading the pack without a doubt. He played a very solid game making 6 pars and 1 birdie with a gross 86 and a net 67 taking 1st place. Well played KK.

Second flight was Fernando, Andrew and Wahyudi. Conditions were clearly good, greens smooth although an unpredictable mix of fast and slow greens and the weather held dry. Wahyudi started with a monster 3 wood drive. Might have been his best shot of the day. Long story short, he shot in the 90s but birdied the last. Next course. Andrew played his usual dependable self. Straight and long. One shank and a couple of stray shots hurt his final score. 81 was his final. Fernando struggled with the driver all day. Slice and slice some more. Despite that, good chipping and putting saved the day for a respectable 85.

Third flight off Hole #1 was the three ball of Bobby, Peter and Adrian. Bobby was playing his second 18 of the day for 36 holes total walking on his Friday. Harry Vardon would be proud. Bobby played a steady game with several pars to post an 88 but faded a little unsurprisingly on his back nine. Adrain started really strong with a birdie on hole #1, unfortunately a double par and lost ball on hole 16 spoilt what would have been a great game. Last in this group was Peter, playing his first game with JAWS since the anniversary game, welcome back Peter. His short game and putting were both sharp but struggled with his iron-play.

The last flight off from Hole #1 were Simon, Rony, Dea and Aldila. Simon started strong with a birdie and following up with birdies on holes 5 and 8 to post an opening nine 1 under 35. Some sloppy approach shots on the back nine, from the fairways after good drives resulted in a few bogey’s and a mysterious lost ball on hole 16 cost him a double par and most likely some prize money finishing with a 78 gross, nett 73. Rony was the second male in the flight, and used his local knowledge wisely posting a very impressive 39 on the front nine, putting on an exhibition of chipping and pitching regularly getting up and down for par when his approach shots finished short of the small greens. Things slipped a bit on the back nine but nonetheless a 86 gross, nett 68 won him Best Nett 2 on the day. A warm welcome back to Indonesia lady pro: Dea playing off the blue tees and scratch with the boys. She took her time to get warmed up but her game got hot on the back nine, with 6 pars and a birdie for 37 to shot 76 overall posting the lowest gross for the day and Es Kelapa Mudah from Simon who she beat 3&2 in a matchplay duel off the stick, having been 3 down on the turn. A warm welcome to Dila playing her first game with JAWS. Her first time playing Modern also and for a beginner in the game, she will be happy with her 105 highlighted by a birdie on the Par 3 Hole #3 knocking in a 20ft putt!

Next up his Jagorawi Old Course on Tuesday 7th December for a 8am tee off. Happy Golfing Sharks!

Congratulations to the Winners:

  • Best Net I: Karan Khetan – Nett 67
  • Best Nett II: Rony Muliana– Nett 68
  • Best Nett III: Jude Alexander – Nett 70
