the day that was 22nd January, 2021

How does one narrow their golf bag down from 14 to four clubs?

From the 1-iron to the putter, the Pros provide some insight.  Lee Trevino once said, “ If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron.”

While the importance of the putter was articulated well by Arnold Palmer when he said, “How did I make a twelve on a par five hole? It’s simple. I missed a four-foot putt for an eleven.”  Picking out other clubs was somewhere in between science and black magic for the 25 Sharks who took on the 2021 JAWS 4-Club Challenge on Friday afternoon.

The seven flights teed off at Modern Golf Club with threatening clouds and drizzle but ended up with beautiful weather and net scores ranging from 67 to 91.   Nothing tops a great day like free icy beer on the 19th hole.

A big shout-out to our sponsor San Miguel. Ito Ang Beer!  Thanks to all who made it out for a very fun day.

A fun day was had for the group of Gaurav, Willi, Aleksi and Giles. From the first hole Aleksi was his usual jovial self. The best round of the group went to Gaurav, who was putting with a 6 iron.

He didn’t start off well with an 8 on the first, but then his round really came together.  Aleksi had too much movement in the hips on some tee shots, which I think will become a new dance move if we’re all paired together again. Willi pieced together a nice round, even though his longest club was a 6 iron.

Shot of the day was Willi almost making a hole in one, the ball pitched 1 foot past the pin. Giles suffered from a few shanks that really messed up his scorecard, along with almost always missing the club face of his rescue off the tee. Only good thing was his hot Scotty on the greens, sinking putts from everywhere.

There were a lot of laughs in this group and the 4-club Challenge was a lot of fun.

Walking bunch Divya, Eric, John, and Priyaji teed off steadily from hole 1. Signature trash talk was there from all four players with expert golf commentary provided by Priyaji who found it a lot better than his game.

Nevertheless, the battle continued between Erik and John throughout the game, only to have John to prevail with shot consistency. Divya, on the other hand, took the 4 club challenge to next level.

With the ability to hit 52-deg as far as 150m, he decided to lose 7 balls. With those heroics, Divya will bring 52, 52, 52 deg, and a putter to the next 4-club challenge.

Overcast, rain threatening, and free beer from our sponsor at the club house.  It was a perfect day for golf!  Carlo, Chris L, Jim, and Albert, joined together for the 4-club challenge at Modern Golf Course.

The strategies varied across the group. Chris chose driver, 5w, 9i and putter. Carlo also carried the driver, where Jim and Albert opted for 3w and 5w respectively.  Albert was the only one not carrying a putter,  using a 5w instead.  Given he only 3 putted once, it was not a glaring choice.

Chris found success chipping with a 9 iron.  Solid round by all, Jim led the way 16 over 4 below his HC.  Jim and Albert placed in the top 6.

The format was great and indeed it really makes you focus on playing 2 to 3 shots ahead, as well to  playing to what works in the bag.   Important to mentioned that we had free beer from our sponsor, so everyone was a winner.

The straight talking group of Geoff, James and Willie headed off to hole 4 where they were greeted by an empty course which allowed the trio to breeze round and be back in the clubhouse to enjoy the generosity of Mr San Miguel.

Before that the 1st tee saw three good drives leaving each player with that tough judgement of how to hit a 7 iron 120m . Both Geoff and Willie had decided to leave their putters at home, decisions that on the whole paid off once the putting strength of a rescue was tempered.

Two double pars by James put paid to any challenge, although the rest was steady enough for a net 79. Geoff was very steady and once he got the rescue under control on the greens his putting numbers improved and a net 81 followed.

Willie topped the group with a net 73,  which considering his lack of course knowledge was a great return, and were it not for finding the water on the 1st he could well have been in the money.

Robson, Pras and Jens played in one flight starting from hole number 2. Pras started the round well with a par. He managed to tee off well into the fairway but he didn’t seem to have much confidence in his chipping.

That flaw in his game cost him at least 6 extra strokes. He managed to get a few more pars and one birdie on the round but still only managed to get a net score of 75. Jens was also having a pretty consistent day from the tee box with his trusted three wood.

Unfortunately, the speed of the greens were playing tricks on him which caused him to have quite a number of three-putts. Jens managed to score 6 pars and one birdie to achieve a net 76.

Robson shots throughout the day were rather inconsistent, shooting the ball towards all directions of the course.

The one area where he never found the trouble was his putting with no 3-putts on the day. He managed to have 4 pars and finished with a net 74.

Widyantyo, Kristyawan, Agung and Agus all found the challenges of only four clubs in the bag.

While relatively consistent on the greens, Widyanto could not find his normal array of pars.

Kristyawan found pars but struggled some on the greens.  Agung started off strong with two pars on the first three holes but then found trouble particularly on the 14th and 18th holes.

Agus struggled on the greens but hit the greens on ¾ of the par 3s.

Parman, Randy and Tarlok all found their usual share of pars but also 4-club trouble.

Parman smashed in 8 pars and a birdie but triple on 10 and few doubles kept him out of contention.

Randy hit a few pars but not enough for the low handicapper he is to compete.

Tarlok braved the challenge without a putter and still managed the greens like a pro but too many bogies kept him out of contention.
