The day that was ….

Golfing ‘Wisdom’ of the Day

“Golf… is the infallible test. The man who can go into a patch of rough alone, with the knowledge that only God is watching him, and play his ball where it lies, is the man who will serve you faithfully and well. “

P. G. Wodehouse

Despite the rain gods threatening to play spoil sports, the weather held up well at Gading Raya for a good round of Golf: as Tuesday 9th February saw 17 JAWS Players return to the wide fairways and expansive greens of Gading Raya in West Jakarta, after gross mis-management from the Pangkalan Jati management forced the admin’s to cancel and re-locate to this more then adequate replacement. As the sun shone bright and high in the sky all morning it was clear we made the right decision.

Willi Goldschimdt, Pras and Hari were the first sharks to tee off from hole 10.

Willi was having a rough day at the office (Golf Course). Out of 18 holes, he only hit a couple of Drives that were to his satisfaction.

All the other shots went to every direction except what was intended… straight down the fairway or onto the Green. Luckily, his putting was trustworthy as ever as he was still able to salvage bogey’s on most of the holes where his balls didn’t find a hazard. Willi finished the round with a nett 76 score.

Hari, was also having an on/off day on the golf course. While his shots were the shortest off the tee and not the most accomplished chipper, he was however, the first in this flight to hole a par on the 14th hole. Hari also finished the round with a nett 76 score.

Pras, armed with a new Titleist driver, unusually for him, was struggling off the tee. Clearly he needs more time to get aquainted with his new driver. His short game has clearly improved, with his pitching and chips leaving him shorter putts to save pars and bogey’s. He finished the round with a nett 71 score.

In the 2nd Flight off Hole #10, Kholifan, a single handicap player playing his first round with the Jaws was paired with Ruth and Willie Noronha in a 3 ball flight.

Kholifan was rock steady throughout the 18 holes and sunk a 6 foot solitary birdie to compensate for the 5 near miss birdie chances he had elsewhere during the round. He ended up playing 3 over his handicap. If only he had managed to sink all those missed birdie chances, he would have had his lunch money covered.

Willie Norona on the other hand did not find his rhythm throughout the front nine and struggled quite a bit despite knocking in a 15 foot birdie on the 14th Par 3 but recovered pretty well on the back nine with another birdie and a brace of Pars.  Unfortunately it was too little to late as he found  himself out of contention of any winnings after the damage done on the front nine.

Ruth showed some brilliance in patches also playing better on the back nine: with back to back Pars and a near miss birdie but a few tiring holes on the front nine did not do justice to her final score.

Third Flight off Hole # 10 were Fernando, Lok and Chris

2018 Gading Raya Matchplay Champion: Lok started with two bogey’s,  but then got his game together and played mostly par golf onwards till 18.

His drives were straight all day and his irons were generally accurate, but playing off a 5 handicap doesn’t leave much room for errors and a few today cost him. Meanwhile, Gading Raya long-term member:

Fernando had a good game with nine pars and no doubles. He was consistent throughout his round, hitting long drives and accurate approach shots. He went on to finish with a flawless Net 68, one shot behind the overall winner.

Chris played well too with a Nett 70. He played mostly bogey golf with 5 pars but a few bad drives led to two double bogey’s which cost him a few pounds sterling. The group played quickly throughout the round and the golfing conditions were perfect.

The fourball of Chandra, Geoff, the Flying Finn and Divya, were the fourth flight off #10, with the not so flying finn arriving just in time for tee off.

Chandra and Aleksi started strong progressing from strength to strength on the front 9 with The Flying Finn recording a 40, sadly he ran out of steam on the back nine, nonethless a solid 73 nett, best nett 5 and some petrol money. Geoff played his steady as ever golf tee to green, but 3 blow out holes cost him dearly, soon to be forgotten with a few beers at the clubhouse.

Divya started strong, but was distracted too often with work calls to remain in the zone, and posted a forgettable 94, nonetheless a great day out with the boys.

The fourball of Iris, Dea, Shas and Simon, were the final flight teeing off from the Par 5 Hole #10. Iris was solid as ever off the first tee, and was more then upto the challenging teeing off alongside an Indonesian Female Touring Professional.

Sporting a pair of well tailored and pyschedelic golf trousers Iris’ game was on point in all departments and enjoyed the competitive company of her playing partner yet some loose putts cost her a few dollars but a Best Nett 5 finish was more then respectable.

Dea, usually keen to slug it out off the blues with the men, kindly played off the red tees to keep Iris company. With a chip in for eagle on our first hole, hole #10, clearly a smart decision.

Having got off to such a flying start, a couple of wild drives put some pressure on her approach shots leading to one too many bogey’s, however 1 eagle and 2 birdies is not a bad day at the office coming in with an even par 72 off the stick and shared best nett 5 honors.

Great to see the youngster Shas back on the golf course playing with JAWS, making the most of his high school holidays on the golf course getting some fresh air and having fun. His first nine was not surpirisngly a little rusty, as it was his first 18 holes for sometime for precautionary reasons.

As the back nine started the smooth and languid swing from this tall and lanky youngster returned as the ball returned to the centre of the face and a much improved back nine. Simon had a great day at the office (Golf Course), having paid a short visit to a golf professional’s (garage) at the weekend to service his ‘swing’, he has clearly put in the work and done his home work.

One of his regulars strengths returned with ‘solid’ and long drives regularly finding the fairways allowing him to attack the pins with his wedges and resulting in much shorter birdie putts….two birdies were converted from a possible eight on the card. When his irons were a bit off, his short game was on point getting up and down: 6 out of 9 times ‘scrambling’ pars, to post a Nett 67 and his best round in months, and some well earned lunch and beer money.

Congratulations to the Winners:

  1. Simon Reynolds – Nett 67
  2. Fernando Gaggino – Nett 68
  3. Chris Lever – Nett 70
  4. Prasetyo Sutowo – Nett 71

RULES CORNER

If the edge of the hole is damaged, may I repair it?

Before you put you find out, that the flight ahead of you damaged the edge of the hole with the flagstick. Are you allowed to repair it?

Sorry no, the repair would be regarded as a touch of the putting line. This is not allowed. But there are exceptions. If the whole got a serious damage you have to inform the tournament organizers and they will arrange the repair. If this is not possible in a reasonable timely manner, then you are allowed to repair it.

Completely different is the situation, if the damaged was caused by a ball, then you are allowed to repair it any time.

In matchplay, are you allowed to trick your competitor with the wrong amount of strokes?

Your competitor in matchplay ask you at the green, how many strokes you already made. To trick him, for example to cause him to make a risky put, you tell him a wrong number. Is that allowed?

Absolutly not. The rule says clearly, that your competitor has the right to know the correct number of strokes you already made.

If you tell him the wrong number you lose the hole

NEXT UP

Finally, next up Cengkerang GC on Thursday 11th February 2021 (as Friday is a public holiday- Chinese New Year) , with our regular 12 noon tee off, 17 players have signed up, if you are keen to join this event please sign up asap.
