the day that was: Golf at Modern GCC, 6 April 2021

Tuesday 6:30am & 8:00am, 6th April 2021

“If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a one iron. Not even God can hit a one iron.”

  • Lee Trevino

12 JAWS Golfers headed West to Modernland and to multiple Britsih Open Winner, Peter Thomson’s  18 Hole Layout: Modern Golf and Country Club. The venue is becoming one of JAWS’ home base venues with its easy access, good price and walking option for a course always in very tidy condition. Once again the early bird 6:30am tee time proved very popular with two flights teeing off just after daybreak, with the morning dew still fresh on the fairway’s.

Pras, Divya, James Lyu, and newcomer Billy were the first to tee off at 6:30 from tee number 10. Pras’ long game was surprisingly very inconsistent, surprising as usually it is considered to be the best part of his game. Many of his balls ended up in hazards such as in the water or bunker, but his chipping and putting saved him from playing a truly terrible round of golf. Pras finished the round with a nett 74 and tied for 3rd place. James Lyu was also struggling to consistently hit it straight off the tees, but his superb putting was the key for him having 11 pars in the round and him finishing with a gross 86. Divya’s long game was in very impressive form but alas, every other aspect of the game seem to be on vacation as he was struggling the whole day. Divya finished the rounds with a nett 78. Newcomer Billy showed a few glimpses of possible greatness as he was hitting his driver very long, albeit the direction of the ball was less than ideal. He also managed to hole quite a few putts from 15-20 feet. Billy finished the round with a gross 96.

It was an early morning start and the Fresh as Daizy foursome of Giles, Willi N, TPS and Gaurav arrived looking up to the golfing gods for some well-deserved pleasures. Giles started very waywardly but as soon as Gaurav explained the ‘Wolfman’ rules and the prospects of winning some money, Giles game changed for the better and soon the booming drives came out of the bag. It was almost as if he could smell the money. Willi N and TPS both tried hard to get a grip on their games but inconsistency cost them some vital points. Gaurav, aka  the ‘Wolfman’, showed up when it mattered most…. especially if it was a hole worth something. Gaurav, fresh from his blurry exploits at the Bandung Bash (coming home with the trophy), was in good Rhythm and is now gaining dangerous consistency in his all-round game, we are all expecting a single handicap in no time. The highlights of the round were the twin birdies of TPS and Gaurav on the par 5, birdies which silenced their opponents, and the green in 2 for Giles on the par 5, 6th hole for an Eagle putt, which he sadly missed. In the end a missed 2 putt from TPS cost his playing partner Willi N and him some pride and a few dollars. It was a game that the four-ball thoroughly enjoyed, filled with some great banter, some awesome shots, and some missed 2 footers, just to keep them all grounded.

Fabulous day to play a round of golf for Jim, Chris, Ruth and Hilzon.

The weather was good. No rain just a little windy. With the mood set for golf the 8:00 am foursome started with a match-play game between Ruth and Hilzon. It was a great match up which went the distance, all the way to the 18th hole. Where Hilzon would eventually win 2 Up on the 18. Both players played well, but Hilzon’s steady long game helped to seal the win for the day.  Driving the ball onto the fairway’s and hitting greens in reg, Hilzon would shoot a net 74 and Ruth would score a net 79,   well played to both players.

Chris was the third player in the group. He would play a well rounded game. Trying to stay focused on hitting the fairways, his long game was coming up a little bit short on distance. He ended up scoring a net 74 as well,  and tied for 2nd best net overall.

The last one in the group was Jim,  playing just a 3 wood off the tee box he seemed to start off with a good game scoring a 44 on the front nine. He would struggle a little bit on the back as fatigue begun to set in on a hot and muggy morning. He would go on to post a score of net 72 and win 1st place

Great day at Modern Golf Country Club.
