the day that was: Bogor Raya Golf on 11 June

Friday 11th June 2021

“For true success, it matters what our goals are. And it matters how we go about attaining them. The means are as important as the ends. How we get there is as important as where we go.”

  • Old Tom Morris

17 JAWS Sharks travelled up the Jagorawi Toll Road, and turned off at the Bogor Kebun Raya exit:  arriving at the beautifully manicured gardens and fairways of Bogor Raya Golf Club. On a first trip to play a JAWS game at Bogor Raya after a very long time, the JAWS sharks were re-united with a course perfect for a game of social golf designed by Aussie Graham Marsh, complete with great caddies and an award winning club house to enjoy some snacks and refreshments after the Round. Some very low nett scores were scored and the course was clearly in very good condition and with all the practice playing challenging courses, it has made our JAWS Sharks even sharper!

First Flight off at Midday from Hole #1 were: Willi G accompanied by young starlets Aryan and Shasvat. The course was in pristine condition and the pace of play was excellent. Aryan started with a 9 on the par 5 first and somehow struggled the front nine to steady the ship. It was much better at the 2nd half of the back nine where he finished with 3 bogeys on the last 3 holes.

Playing of 28 HC he shot a 60 & 48 to finish with a total 108 net 80. It was the first time for him to play on this course and I am sure he will score much better on his second round.

Shasvat is playing of 15 HC and hits it straight and long, he has potential to improve his HC.

Unfortunately he couldn’t handle the fast greens and therefore ended up with a lot of 3 putts and even a 4 putt. He shot 48 & 50 for a total 98 net 83.

Willi G. took his old driver hoping for straighter drives and more fairways. The strategy worked at least this time and will be content on a steady score of 43 & 43 total 86 net 67.

The net 67 was good enough to earn the 2nd best net for the day.

The Second flight off Hole # 1 were: Andrew (3 hdcp), Laurie (27 hdcp) and Fernando (hdcp 12). Andrew started hot: Drives down the middle, greens in regulation and 2 puts hole after hole after hole. As Laurie said: “boring” … 38 on front and 42 on back where he started to miss fairways for Mr Consistent. Laurie showed his wealth of experience by hitting shorter drives but mostly straight. A bit of rust on his putting and chipping held him back from making pars but still managed 101 net 74 ! Fernando was very good at times and very bad at times. Many pars and 4 doubles plus a triple for an exciting 84 (45 and 39) net 71.

The first flight off Hole # 10 at midday were: Aleksi, Ola and Kent. Kent was lucky to get an invitation to compete in the Bogor Viking Golf Duel between Aleksi from Finland and Ola from Sweden as the two vikings traded one big drive after the other leaving their little caddies in awe of such brute strength and power. Aleksi played a round of two halves, playing one very good nine and one very bad nine posting a so so Net: 75. His reluctance to hit his 3 wood proved costly as his ‘wild’ drives got him into a bit of bother on several holes resulting in one penalty score too many. A plan B may need to be utilised in future rounds. But his opening nine 39 shows huge potential and his back nine of 49 frustrating.

Ola, has a big drive and he enjoyed the wide open fairways at Bogor Raya. When a drive went off line, he was lucky enough to find a good lie in an adjacent fairway and still savaged a good score. Ola’s game continues to go from strength to strength and his 93 playing off a 27 handicap will give him great confidence and not with regular scores breaking 100, next step is to breal 90, come on Ola, you can do it! Ola’s Nett 66 was good enough to share Best Nett 1 for the day!

Kent seemed to enjoy his afternoon golfing with the Vikings! Bogor Raya clearly one of his favourite courses, Kent put together a tidy round of 46 & 47, Gross 93, Nett 71 to just miss out on some winnings. Kent was striking his full swing shots well and with some work on his shirt game he will be breaking 90 regularly.

The second flight off Hole #10, was the Wolfman Pack of: Gaurav, Willie N, Roger and Srinivas. Wolfman Shirke had an up and down round. With some good shots and some bad ones. His soft hands got him out of trouble around the greens and on the greens a few times on a day where his Driver failed to comply with directions. Shirke finished with a 85, nett 76.

Willie N, continued his good form and his steady rise up the Hammerhead Cup table. Sticking to the formula of hitting fairways and greens in regulation, a couple of lipped out putts and a ball getting stuck in a palm tree mid round did not help as he posted a Gross 90, Nett 75.

Roger was up next and enjoyed his afternoon of golf in the Wolf Pack. Forever solid with his approach shots, chipping and putting, Roger was a wee bit off with his Drives, leaving him with long second shots. Nonetheless an enjoyable Gross 85 and nett 76 and a fun day golfing.

Last but not least was Srinivas. Srinivas was the Top Dog in this pack and had his best round for sometime. Despite teeing it up with 3 lower handicappers in his flight, Srinivas posted the lowest gross score from the Wolf pack showing the others how to play with a solid game off the tee backed up with good approach shots and a steady short game. Finishing up with a Gross 84 and Nett 66, for joint Best Nett 1 honours on the day. Well played sir!

Teeing off at 12:30 after Friday prayers were: Randy, Aldi, Carlo and Febian.  Randy started with a bogey but then made 10 pars over the next 17 holes to recover. He was consistent throughout the round and shot, net score 69  to win the best net 4. Randy’s consistent ball striking and good short game allows him to score well on most courses, today was no exception.

Aldi is a very consistent golfer. He played a good game. Aldi scored 1 birdie and 7 pars with a gross score of 81 and a net score of 74. Playing Par and Bogey golf, Aldi played a very tidy game and his patience rewarded with him with a birdie, 81 is a good score on most courses.

Carlo who is a regular at Bogor Raya and knows the course very well. He struggled a little taking him 2 holes before making his first par. His putting on the green showed that he is a regular at this course. Using only one hand to putt, Carlo is an example of why we love Golf, everyone is unique in this great game. He scored a gross 92 and a net 70 and finished just a couple of strokes outside the winnings.

Febian started with a triple bogie.  He was driving well but struggled with his irons all round.  He was dissapointed with his game as he only made one par. Net Score 77. Nothing a trip to the driving range or some lessons with a coach can not fix.

Congratulations to the Winners:

  1. Srinivas & Ola  – Nett 66
  2. Willi G – Nett 67
  3. Randy  – Nett 69
