“Golf is the closest game to the game we call life. You get bad breaks from good shots; you get good breaks from bad shots – but you have to play the ball where it lies.”
- Bobby Jones
14 JAWS Sharks ventured to Jakarta Golf Club, for a round of Golf at Indonesia’s ‘oldest’ Golf Club, established by the British in 1872, playing at the Rawamangun Course since 1927. Alway’s a great walk on this very compact inner-city course, with it’s tree-lined fairway’s, inpsired by the traditional style of the UK’s parkland courses. With several very unusual holes among the 18 holes, the course requires alot of creativity to manouevre your ball through the numerous dog-legs, low-hanging branches and over several stratigically positioned ponds and unexpected water hazards. Regular play at this tight inner-city course will turn even the wonkiest of players into a straight one! The highlight of the game is often the post-game beverage on the open air verandah patio overlooking out onto the course and within touching distance of players teeing of on Hole 1.

First Flight off at 6:30 am were the early birds of Emil, Subash and Dan: It was a bright morning and perfect weather for Golf at Jakarta Golf Club. With the first group starting on Hole No 1. Emil made a Par while Dan found the trouble on left side of the fairway. Dan was consistently trying to find his tempo and after a long warmup made a par on the 9th hole. Next was Subush was also taking awhile to find his groove, but was rewarded for his patience and perseverance when he finally made par on the 12th hole.
It really was a tough day on the Course for the 3 Sharks. Several of which were struck with a double par and some tripple bogeys as their games got a little messy. Whilst Dan struggled and posted a Gross 103, Emil was only marginally better with a 94 as he continues to experiment with different grips. Subush shot a 93 but left a lot of strokes on the course, nothing a trip to the practice area cannot fix. All in All a bad day on the course is still preferable to a good day at the office! As all three players will come better prepared for their next JAWS outings.

The Second flight off at 6:30 were the early birds of Priyaji, Punit and Manish teed off from hole 10. Punit had a tough day at the office, where he struggle to get some consistency with his shots right from the start. Nevertheless he battled right to the end making couple of pars. Manish was very consistent with his drives but could not convert most of his opportunities to make pars. The Short game was a struggle for everyone throughout the entire course which is crucial to make a low score. That was part of Manish’s main struggle, who scored a gross 97. Heavy hitting Priyaji was driving long all day. Although on the course back nine he was a struggling with a 47, he managed to get few pars and a birdie to to salvage a nett 71, after a strong finish.
The final flight off just after 6:30 were: Pras, Kent, Shlok and Aryan: these young guns tee’d off the last from hole 10 of Jakarta Golf Club. The greens were in great condition and the fast speed made all four players struggle with their putting. Pras was using his hybrid to tee off on the majority of the holes to try to keep the ball in play but the trees on either side of the fairways had other plans as he kept having trouble making greens in regulation. Pras finished the day with a nett 74. Kent was lucky as he is not a long hitter so it was safe for him to use his driver for most tee shots. Kent was struggling for a little bit with his chipping early on but managed to figure out the green speeds early which helped him to get a nett 72 and tied for the third best score of the day. Shlok was easily finding the fairway with his 5 Iron of the tee box but was having a hard time with his short game chipping and putting on to the hard and fast greens. Shlok finished the day with a nett 72 and tied for third place of the day. Aryan showed that he has the most experience at Jakarta Golf Club. He was able to navigate the tight fairways the best out of the 4 golfers in the flight and finished with a nett 69. Winning first place for the day.
First and only flight at 8:00am were Jim, Aleksi, Hilzon and Agung: The weather was warm the fairways narrow & the greens were smooth and fast. Aleksi started out hitting the ball pretty good, But the golf gods refused to let his ball fall into the hole. He either rimmed out or stopped 1 inch from the hole 4 times on the first 7 holes. This would be enough to push anyone over the edge. Aleksi started to struggle with his tee shots on the back nine also. Finishing up with a net 80.
Hilzon and Agung were playing a match game. They both seemed to struggle a little. On the front nine Hilzon was 2 up. But they were going back and forth. After the the turn Agung had a hard time hitting from the tee box. Hilzon’s driver came alive and he started hitting the ball straight down the middle. Every shot was better than the last one. He didn’t stop. Hilzon won his match 3 up with 2 to play. I believe both guys had a great time. Hilzon scored a net 81 and Agung scored a net 90.
Last in the group was Jim. He had a rough game from the tee box as he only used his driver 3 times. His chipping and putting were the only thing working for him. He scored a gross 95 and a net 76.
