Thursday 17th June – Friday 18th June 2021
“Golf is a game in which you yell fore, shoot six, and write down five.” — Paul Harvey calling every golfer out.

20 JAWS Sharks travelled to Kota Parahyangan to play 36-Holes at the World Class Parahyangan Golf, which unsurprisingly was voted Indonesia’s #1 Golf Course in 2020. The JAWS Outstation Captain Willi Goldschimdt successfully negotiated a very attractice ‘Stay and Play’ package which included 36 Holes of Golf plus one night including breakfast for 2 at the nearby sister hotel Mason Pine. The Hotel recently completed the opening of the new wing, complete with 8 floors and a classy rooftop bar on the 8th floor.

This was the third visit by the JAWS Golf Society to Parahyangan but this visit was a bit more special as the format was an official 36-Holes Competition (Nett Based) over two rounds played on Thursday 17th June 12pm and Friday 18th June 8am, with the Best Nett Winner crowned for the player with the lowest total nett scores for the two rounds. Its easy to put in a good score over 18 holes but to back it up the following day is impressive Golfing!

After Round 1 the scores were recorded and announced to all players at the Clubhouse, and the main excitement was the ‘pairings’ for Day 2 which were based on the Nett Score Rankings from Day 1, so the leading players teeing off last and the first group would bet he players with the highest nett scores. Parahyangan Golf lived up to it’s reputation as a tough, challenging course with only 2 of the 20 players shooting their handicap or below… and rumour has it one anonymous player lost 15 golf balls to the course and the elements. The scoreboard was occupied by some of the regular hungry SHARKS, and a handful of ‘inform’ players who were dominating the HAMMERHEAD CUP were in contention and making a statement.

The stage was set for Day 2’s play as the group all retreated down the road to The Mason Pine Hotel to freshen up, enjoy the hotel, and for the several players who travelled up with their partners/family, time to catch up before dinner and drinks.

With Drinks flowing and cigars lit, the JAWS sharks relaxed and enjoyed the crisp and cooler Bandung temperature, reminiscing about the day’s play earlier, with the rooftop bar and restaurant on the 8th floor the chosen venue. A big thanks to the management for kindly agreeing to extend their opening hours until 22:00. With a 8:00 am tee time looming the next day and 18 holes of Golf to settle the 36-Hole event, players retired back to their rooms to prepare for the final days play. Whilst black clouds, and light rain threatened to spoil Day one’s play a member of the JAWS admin team prayed to the weather gods before bed time to ensure favourable weather for the final round.

The JAWS players invaded the coffee shop from 645 – 700 am clearing out the food and beverage department of all their eggs and sausages, along with several gallons of black coffee being consumed the players ensured they got their money’s worth and enjoyed a very good breakfast spread laid on by the Hotel.
With belly’s full and tanked up with coffee it was time for Round 2, and otw to the course it was a great sight to be greeted with blue skies and sunshine for the final’s day play. The atmosphere amongst the group was fun and jovial on the putting green before tee off with player’s catching up mostly about the Euro 2021 games overnight. GAME ON!

The weather on Day 2 could not have been any better, with blue skies and blazing sun all morning, and there was no sign of the strong winds blowing through the valley the previous afternoon, and as players rushed to their tee boxes for their allocated tee time, any lingering hangovers were quickly forgotten with such beautiful weather shortly after teeing off. A combination of great weather and a great vibe may just have been the formula for some great golf, as there were some big moves up the leaderboard from players in the middle of the pack as none of the ‘Championship flight’ managing to seal the deal allowing Ola to leapfrog the fourball into first place, shooting a cool 67 nett on Day 2 after a 75 nett on Day 1. Matt Timbrel blitzed the course on day 2 with handful of birdies to shoot a 77 taking low gross after a miserable 87 on day one. It’s not how you start it is how you finish! Well Done to all players for navigating your way around this brutal yet amazing championship course layout.

Winners or Losers, the feedback from all participants was very positive and Parahyangan Golf is a great getaway and outstation trip from Jakarta. With its easy access from Jakarta via private vehicle backed up by such a great golf course and facilities, along with it’s modern and cozy sister hotel nearby the admin team will ensure we wont leave it too long for the next visit, maybe a 54-hole event next time!
Congratulations to the Winners:
- Ola – Nett 14- ‘Trophy Winner’
- Indar & Willi G – Nett 144
- Fernando G – Nett 145
- Jim Korbilas – Nett 146
