the day that was 9th August 2020

Something different this week at Jagorawi GC Old Course. JAWS had a 4 Club Challenge and were treated to the lush natural tropical surroundings, good conditions, fast sloping greens and perfect weather.

Starting on the 5th Hole, the challenging downhill Par 5 index 3, was the flight of Mars, Shushant, Dea and Simon. Dea, joining us for the first time, a young lady with a 4 handicap playing with the men from the white tees.

Dea from the first drive (her 3 wood) showed her class with a 230m 3 wood, with a right to left, draw ball flight. Dea was solid all day long off the tee but her short game, and her PW struggled to hold the Old Course sloping greens, nonetheless her ball striking is a real pleasure to watch and learn from.

Mars, like a classic automobile took some time to warm up, and the first 6 holes revealed some numbers we would rather ignore, but a birdie on the Par 5 Hole 15, our 10th Hole of the day, lifted his spirits, two solid hybrids followed by a wedge into the green followed by a 12 foot uphill putt, and exclamation mark of what has earnt Mars a 13 handicap.

Sushant, another JAWS first timer arrived to the tee box in great spirits and up for the 4 club challenge, despite only recently starting up golf. Ball striking was solid off the tee with his chosen hybrid, but poor chipping technique needs to be revised and alongside putting practice will reap very quick overall improvements on the Golf Course.

Simon’s game was as colourful as his Loudmouth shorts, and took around 7 holes to wake up despite the warm tropical midday heat.

The highlight of his round being: a PW from 105m from the fairway, uphill to the Hole on 12, which landed 5 m past the pin and rolled back with the slope grazing the hole for a short 1 m uphill birdie putt. The following hole, the uphill 158m Par 3 13th, he muscled a 7 iron to around 15ft and made the downhill putt for birdie to kick start his round. A fun and challenging day enjoyed on the majestic Old Course, all the more special with only 4 clubs in the bag.

Chris, Fernando, Joseph and newcomer Vijay started on hole number 4.

Fernando had a rough start but soon found his rhythm and started to produce some great shots. His magic continued and he had 3 pars in a row on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. Joseph started well with a par  and was swinging well but too many doubles cost him. Chris played well and played mostly par, bogey golf apart from a few triples.

Vijay improved as the game went on and improved by 6 shots on the back 9. He is sure to improve in the future. Lots of improvisation today but mostly a fun round of golf.

Subash, Parman and Ola played together.

Subash chose his weapons carefully using a 3 wood, 6 iron, 52 wedge and a putter and his thoughtful, calculating play was rewarded with 2nd place overall.

Ola drove well with his rescue and putted well but a few bad holes made his score higher than he deserved. Parman prepared well and used a driver, 7 iron, wedge and putter.

The driver obviously worked well and was a good choice because he managed to win overall with another outstanding round of golf.

Jim, Sena and Satya played in the same group. What an interesting tournament ! Sena is a newcomer to JAWS and to the game of golf but when he connects with the ball he can really hit it well.

Satya, with his long ball hitting, was impressive with a drive on a par 3 that was less than 2 inches from a hole in one and was the group’s highlight of the afternoon.

Jim, who really struggled, went through a record 11 golf balls but still a great time was had by all.

Emil played with team mates Ruth and Nick for the 4 Club Challenge. This took a lot of course management especially at Jagorawi Golf. With Ruth having colourful balls and after adjusting on 9 holes with her club, amazingly picked up her game and her signature putts came through.

Nick’s drives were exceptional especially on par 5’s in which he almost had 2 on’s. However he managed to lose 12 balls but his recovery was good.

And Emil, with his 7 wood,  pretty much hit 80% of fairways but his  putting was off and often overshot the greens. Great experience having 4 clubs to keep you thinking.

Divya, Aiden and Bobby played in the same group. The 4 Clubs Challenge makes you realize how important it is to control your swings and distance as you are improvising.  It was a fun game though..

The game is not all about distance control and course management but also about putting on very tricky, challenging greens of Jagorawi.

Aiden and Divya had many good putts with par attempts while Bobby struggled as mostly he landed on the green, 5m short and then had many long putts.

All of the group had some bad tee offs but generally the group had difficulty on the greens. All in all great fun.

Congratulations to the winners today of the 4 Club Challenge. In first place was Parman with a Net 71 and in 2nd place was Subash with Net 73. 3rd place was Chris with a Net 74, 4th was Bayu, Net 75 and 5th place was Fernando with Net 78.
