the day that was 22nd December 2020

A Tuesday morning visit to Modern Golf Course saw 17 golfers tackle the course with overcast conditions, fast greens and general good playing conditions.

Teeing off from Hole #10, and the ‘walking’ flight were the foursome of: Gaurav, Divya, Bobby and Simon. Gaurav fresh off his Blue Jacket presentation on Sunday at Matoa was coming into the game on a rich vein of form, and his well struck 3 wood on the first hole cleared showed why, long, straight with a penetrating ball flight.

Gaurav was keen to remind us on the putting green that Modern will always have a place in his heart as it was at this course many months ago where he played his very first JAWS game, thus its a course he has good feelings about.

Gaurav’s all round was very solid on the day, and chipped in twice during the round, once for birdie and once for par. The highlight of his round was without a doubt on hole 5, the 460m Par 5, playing into the wind, Gaurav ripped his opening 3 wood 240 yards down the middle, with the ball coming to rest 260 yards from the green in the middle of the fairway.

With the wind against but full of confidence he pummelled his 2nd shot with the same 3 wood and it pierced through the wind landing just short of the green, a solid chip and a very easy birdie followed, and a respectable best net III, net 72.

Divya, also rich in form, despite a few loose drives played below his handicap, making up for his tee balls with some precision iron play, like the 6 iron on the par 3, Hole #3. Playing 170 yards to a middle pin, and wind against, he hit a solid iron shot which never left the pin resting pin high 10 ft out.

The putt was made, along with several clutch putts during the round resulting in a Best Nett 1 winning (that’s two in a row) Net 70 total. Great Golf. Bobby, full kudos for initiating the walking golfers for the day. Was the best dressed winner in his Pink JAWS shirt. After his opening drive the question was whether he was spending all his WFH hours at the driving range as he hit a series of 250-260m booming drives with his new PING 425 LSTEC driver with his characteristic draw.

Despite his prodigious length off the tee and solid approach shots, too many loose chips and some cautious putting prevented him from a place on the podium… nonetheless a good walk and some fun golfing.

Simon started slowly with a pair of bogey’s and being the low handicapper in this all star flight needed to perform. The ball was not quite hitting the sweet spot and the chips too loose around the greens. An inward nine of 39 and a solid birdie on hole 18 with a regulation fairway then green and 12 putt offered some late consolation at the end of the round.

Pras, Shashvat and William were the first to tee off at hole 1 with a light drizzle to accompany them for the first three holes.

Pras started off well enough with a bogey and a par, but some wayward shots and inexperience with the course cost him from having the best round he could have had. William started off rough with a pair of double bogeys, but after a few holes his body had warmed up and he started to strike the ball well. Especially by sinking a birdie shot from 160 meters out.

Young Shashvat also had a handful of good shots during the round. Sporting a brand new putter, he clearly needs a few more rounds to grow accustomed to the weight of the club.

A wonderful morning on the grass for Antoine, Antoni and Geoff.

On the front 9, Antoni and Geoff started very well while Antoine, as usual, was behind, farrrr!!!!!!!!behind. The company was very enjoyable until Geoff started to look more often for his balls in the bushes after scoring 2 birdies… must be the age 🤣The second 9 was truly exciting with 3 players making pars after pars and having some great fun on and around the greens!

Priyaji, Joseph and Mi Hwa played in the same flight. Priyaji played a solid round with 46 on the front and back including a birdie on hole 11 and Net 73. Joseph improved on the back 9 but made too many doubles today to trouble the leaders.

Mi Hwa continues to improve and made 5 pars and a Net 76 and generally played well.

A wonderful day at Modern for the  Filcom Group,  Emil, Jude, Richie and Mike.

Mike and Richie were making their JAWS first appearance and started with relentless pars starting from hole 10 with Mike taking second place whilst Richie shared 4th place overall despite some tricky greens.

Jude and Emil also played well scoring just above their handicaps in what was a fun round of golf.

Congratulations to the winners:

1) Divya Net 70.

2)  Geoff and Mike E, Net 71

4) Antoine, Gaurav and Richie, Net 72.
