The day that was ….
The tension in the air was thick enough to cut with an Indonesian Kris as 19 Sharks set off Tuesday morning for a round at Emeralda Golf Estate.

Despite big early morning rain, the weather held up for the round with the fairways staying slightly soggy but manageable.

The tension was palpable as most players in the five flights were eager to hone their skills for the myriad of JAWS events coming up in the weeks ahead.

From the kick off of the JAWS World Cup Matchplay to the first JAWS Anniversary Cup, there is lots of competition in the air and most players looked ready with net scores ranging from 67 to 85. A big thanks to all who made it out for a fun day and good luck!

Geoff, Aleksi, Divya and John all found moments of brilliance and agony on the day. Geoff was his consistent self most of the day finishing the very strong on the last three holes of the front nine.

While he stayed steady for most of the back nine, he found just enough trouble to keep him out of contention. Aleksi found some of his amazing long shots off the tees and fairways but way too many errant shots had him searching the jungle for balls a good part of the day.

Divya, the Megalodon, keep on his normal pressure hitting pars on the first two holes and then an impressive birdie on the 10th hole. A few double bogies kept him off the top spot but 8 pars and a birdie still placed him joint 5th on the JAWS Leaderboard.

John found some great moments particularly on the greens but inevitable bad holes turned to disaster holes and resulted in a score higher than he would have liked.

Second Flight off Hole#1 Lake consisted of Emil Marcelo, Bobby Cangkrama, Willy Noronha and Simon Reynolds. Looking sharp in his JAWS Golf apparel, Emil stripped his opening drive long and straight down the middle. After an easy 2-putt par on Hole#1, Emil struggled to find consistency especially with his long game, perhaps he was trying too hard to find distance, when clearly: good contact and a smooth transition clearly reaped better results.

On hole #8 Lake, the down then up Par 5 at 420 m, Emil (Wolff) demonstrated his class and strength. He hit a solid drive followed by a rescue that left him a few metres short of the green. A ‘casual’ chip denied him of what should have been an easy birdie settling for a par. With some work on his second shots and chipping Emil will be tough to beat. A warm welcome back to JAWS stalwart and low-handicapper Bobby ‘Money Man’ Cangkrama after some time off away from the course nursing knee trouble. His opening drive being one of very few off centre strikes, as he went about quietly and confidently making 8 pars and 9 bogey’s and a lone double, to put together a solid 83, net 71 and tied Best net 2 with one of his fellow flight members for the day.

Tee off’s were solid, irons were sharp and several putts grazed the whole, A great display of solid ball striking, welcome back Bro Bobby! Willy also had a great day at the office. His first nine of 45 will give him great confidence and vision towards his potential to improve his game and handicap. It was all the more impressive as he used only a 5 wood off the tee which he consistently hit 220m straight. Once he develops his confidence with his 3 wood and driver, with shorter second shot’s to the green, his putts and chips in theory will be shorter also.

He was playing the River Course 9 layout for the first time put the brakes on a potentially very low score but none the less a net 73 and a tied best net 5 shows promise. Expecting great strides and much improvement this year Willy! Admin Simon had a solid round at Emeralda.

Despite a few errant tee shots, he successfully took advantage of the short par 4’s and par 5’s recording 3 birdies for the round and was whiskers away from 2-3 more. His scorecard was colourful to say the least: 3 birdies, 9 pars, 3 bogey’s, 2 double’s and 1 triple resulted in a net 71 and a tied best net 2 with fellow flight member Bobby C. On two occasions, Simon bounced back well recording individual birdies after both his double bogey’s on the card. Proving a point that, don’t let a bad hole get to you as golf gives you plenty of chances to claw back a bad hole or two.

Willy, Fernando, Yasin and Carlo started off on Lake hole 2. All four were solid on the front nine. Willy played a very solid front nine with four pars and only one double bogie. He found some trouble on the tail end of the back nine finishing up with a double par and triple bogie that kept him out of contention.

Fernando stayed consistent on the front and back nine with no major blow-up holes but too many double bogies. Yasin also stayed relatively consistent on the front and back but didn’t find his normal array of pars to keep him in contention. Newcomer Carlo, unfortunately acquainted himself with the evils of Rivers course to which JAWS players are all too familiar.

He also found some solid play especially on Lake where he hit impressive pars on the 4th and 8th holes.

The round started on the 3rd hole at for Jens, Jim, Iris and Chris. The fairways were wet but in beautiful condition the greens were fast and hard to stick. Unfortunately Jens couldn’t see fit to finish his game and left after 7 holes.

Then there were 2. Iris played well on the course but the slow play on the back nine was so bad it took a toll on both players. Jim played well from the tee box but struggled with his short game. All and all the it was good day and a great round.
