Etihad Cup 2022 Round 2 (Foursomes)

Friday 28th October, Noon Tee Off, Cengkareng Golf Club

Round 2 of the Etihad Cup 2022 saw Team ROW battling with Team Asia in foursomes format (alternate shot). After the 10-2 drumming in Round 1 by ROW over Asia, Team Asia had a mountain to climb to chase down Team ROW led by Captain Willi G.

Willi G and Team ROW were forced to bring in some reinforcements to replace some out of town players, drafting in Marc Dressler, Doctor Ghassan, Andrew Goode and Eric Mary into the frontlines.

Asia Captain Pras, also brought in some changes, with TPS, Subash and Akhil slotting in left with the task with their Asian teammates to chase down the runaway TEAM ROW.

The Play

The big hitting pairing of Dea Mahendra and Bram Sostenes brought the only two points to the table for TEAM ASIA combining well to beat Simon and Roger. The 35 foot downhill putt on Hole #1 to win the hole by Dea set the tone for the match and despite Team ROW drawing level a couple of times, a well deserved win for Team Asia.

The dynamic duo of Fernando and Super Dave once again proved too hot to handle. The match was tied after stealing one on the par 5 14th. On 15, Super Dave chips it from 20m to 0.5m from the cup for gimme par to go 1 Up. On 17, Super Dave pulls his drive left of the greenside bunker. Fernando plays a flop shot over the bunker, that it lands on the slope in the rough, rolls down the steep hill and stops 0.5m from the hole. Asia 3 putt from 15m. Game over.

Match 3 was too tough to call on paper! Long hitting Nick Robson brought a hot putter, combining his long hitting with a fine display with the flatstick as Greg like always did not miss a fairway all day. Nick putted lights out. You know the old saying, “Drive for show, Putt for dough” that was a perfect way to describe his putting. “Clutch putter”. Willie and Srini could not match young man on the greens this time round.

Match 4 was also a tight affair and went down to the 18th Hole. Dr Ghassan and Marc applied the pressure the last 4 holes with Team Asia’s Bobby and Terrence missing a few short putts. A bombed drive on the last hole by Marc helped win the last hole and win 1 up, Team ROW.

Match 5 saw ROW Captain Willi G paired with Eric ‘Santoso’ against the Team ASIA bandits Gaurav and Subash. Both Teams were solid from tee to green and this match was settled on the greens with Willi and Eric knocking in some decisive putts late on in the match to secure victory.

The final matchup saw Team ROW’s highest handicapper yet potentially longest hitters paired against Tarlok and Akhil. Despite a few errand tee shots landing on adjacent fairway’s. The ROW bombers Ola and Andrew distance advantage proved crucial as they won their duel 3 & 2.

Putting and chipping wins the game folks! But some distance off the tee can do no harm.

Well played to Willi G’s Team ROW, with his team performing better on the greens the crucial factor on the day especially under pressure.
